For something different, you’ll want to venture
around
the dock to The Wreck of the Salty Dog. Casual, fun and
in the spirit of the Salty Dog Café, the menu offers some
different variations of traditional items served up by Chef
Herb. Fresh seafood, delicious steaks and sandwiches
in a nautical atmosphere with one of the best views on
the island.
The fabled Salty Dog fishing vessel sank off the coast of
Hilton Head Island during a mighty storm. So the story goes,
the boat capsized and two frightened sailors were tossed
into an angry sea. They were all alone, many miles from
their home port. The boat settled to a watery grave, but a
dog named Jake struggled to save his master's life.
Jake's heroic feat is now legendary, but for years and years
the boat lay out of sight and out of mind. The Wreck of
The Salty Dog was recently located. A salvage operation
was
launched and she was carefully raised from the
briny depths.
A small crowd
was on hand to greet
The Salty Dog as she was
hauled into her home port
at South Beach - her fateful
voyage had finally ended.
A new life awaited her
resurrection, as each part and piece was painstakingly
reclaimed. We invite you to stop by our restaurant and
witness the transformation.
Our tables are crafted from actual deck boards.
The heavy stringers from the hull are now beams
that support our ceilings. Crab traps, rods and
reels, nets, and riggings adorn the house. Visit South
Beach and relive The Wreck of The Salty Dog!
